Birds

Birds are among the most diverse and surprising animals in the zoo. Much like echidnas challenge our expectations as egg-laying mammals, many bird species also break the usual rules—some are strong runners, others are iconic voices of the bush, and some glide quietly through forests. The cassowary is one of the most impressive examples. With its colourful neck and dinosaur-like casque, this powerful ground-dweller plays an important role in shaping rainforests by spreading seeds. The kookaburra brings a lighter touch with its famous laughing call, yet it remains a skilled hunter of insects and small animals. The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo adds a gentle elegance to the landscape, gliding between trees and using its strong beak to reach hidden grubs. Together, these birds highlight the richness of Australia’s wildlife and welcome visitors to explore the remarkable variety found throughout the zoo.
